The richest person on earth

The last time that I checked the money in my bank account I almost started to cry. It's part of being a student I suppose. You are always penniless and counting coins. I barely dare to look at my purse. I think there is nothing more depressing than seeing your wallet as empty as Madrid in August. However, even if I am flat broke, I consider myself one of the richest people on earth.

I have something that is a lot more important than a bank account with some zeros. Better than jewels, fur coats or Apple shares. Something which is worth more than all that and that's harder to find. I have the fortune of having great friends. Friends who are very different from one another. Some who I’ve known for a long time, others who I've met more recently but all of them, equally valuable.

People usually say that while family is imposed to us, we choose our friends. This is why it's so important to choose well. Your friends can save your life. Or save you from life, if you think about it. However, the truth is that you are not actually the one who chooses them but it's the circumstances which point them out to you. It's when disgraces arrive when you realize who you can really count on. Who is ready to fight for you and who ducks out. Who takes your friendship as something personal and not only as a mere pastime. It is then when you see who truly loves you because, as Francisco de Quevedo used to say “A friend should be like blood, which runs to the wound without being called.”

A friend is the one who, by seeing your face, by listening to the tone of your voice or simply by reading your texts already knows if you are ok or not. To whom you say “I need to talk” and he's already putting his coat on and getting into the car to go to your place. “Don’t worry. We’ll solve it all with a good cup of coffee and a couple of cigarettes. And if the coffee weren’t enough, we’ll have a drink!” It’s the person who reminds you of who you are and of your worth when you have forgotten it. The one who, when the world seems to be falling apart under your feet, grabs your hand firmly and says “You are not alone”. The one who, when seeing you down, holds you and asks “Who do we have to kill?”

A friend is the one who, when you totally mess things up, scold you as if he were your mother and nevertheless helps you find your way out of it all. And when there is no solution, he will do whatever is in his hand to make you forget it and have a laugh. It doesn’t matter how annoying you get or if you tell him the same thing over and over. He will always be willing to listen and to advice you in the best way he can. And even if you don’t follow his advice, as it's usually the case, he will never say “I told you”. Instead of that, he will take out his broom and help you clean up. He will pick up your pieces and help you glue them back together so you can forgive yourself for being such a fool.

He's the one who, if necessary, won’t doubt to play the role of Jiminy Cricket, tell off on you and tell you the truth. Your truth. Even if you don’t want to hear it, even if it hurts. Because it’s what is best for you, and you know it. A friend is that person who you can have a fight with and who, nevertheless, is willing to swallow his pride and say “I was wrong” or “Let’s talk” because the love he has for you is a lot more important than whatever silly thing you were fighting over. Because, in the end, most of the fights are over that: over silly things.

A friend is the one who inspires you to be better, to fight for what you want and who, even if he thinks you won’t make it, doesn’t say anything and roots for you because, deep down, what he wants is that you prove him wrong and that you achieve all your goals. It doesn’t matter how much time goes by, if you haven’t seen or talked to each other in months, because a friend (in capital and bold letters) will always be there. It doesn’t matter if you are thousands of kilometers away from each other. Nothing will change.

They say that you don’t realize how rich you are until you have something that money can’t buy. This is why, although I don’t have a cent, I don’t care. I have already assumed that my picture will never appear in the Forbes Magazine. I’m not interested, because even if I’m poor as a church mouse, my friends make me feel like the richest person on earth.

Gente mediocre/ Mediocre people

Mediocre people

The world is full of mediocre people. People who instead of aspiring to their own loaf of bread resign themselves with the crumbs life gives them. Who content themselves with the first thing that comes. Who adapt themselves to things that look very little, if nothing, like what they really want and long for.

Mediocre people who have relationships that suck the life out of them or that don’t provide them with anything. People who prostitute themselves for a caress or a kiss, by fear of solitude or because they believe that what they are looking for is an unattainable ideal. People who get involved in toxic relationships without realizing that, sometimes, it is necessary, and even healthy, to be alone. Every now and then, it is necessary to pull the break up, to talk to yourself and to figure out what it is that you really want. But, instead of that, many dedicate themselves to jump like chimps from one liana to another, from one relationship to another, without letting the wounds that their last adventure left them heal. And, of course, then the problems appear. We go around hurting others and ourselves for not being ready.

Mediocre people who do not fight for what they want. Who accept what they are given without complaining. Who do not dare to say “Hey, you know what? I want more. I want something that turns my life upside down. I don’t want someone who just grabs my hand from time to time. I want a travel partner. Someone who does not only tell me that I’m pretty, but who makes me feel like a million bucks. As if meeting me had been like winning the lottery, finding a needle in a haystack or finding the last sticker they needed to complete their world cup album. I don’t want someone who treats me as if I was something ordinary, interchangeable or normal. Because, in case you hadn’t noticed yet, fortunately or unfortunately, I’m not normal. Fortunately or unfortunately, you will never meet anyone like me even if you live for a thousand years. I want someone to go out of my way for and who goes out of his way for me. Someone who I can get transcendent with without him mocking me and someone I can be stupid with without him thinking that I have a screw loose or that I have hit my head. Someone who, even if his day has been a disaster, sees me walk through the door and thinks “I’m a lucky guy”. Someone who lifts me up when I lack the strength and when things go wrong. Someone to fight for. Someone for who I’m irreplaceable”.

But mediocre people don’t say that. Instead they say “Yes, sir”. Better than a slap in the face. But, what can we expect in a world in which people fight over who gets more likes on their profile picture? Where they spend the whole day taking selfies and competing to see who is the coolest and who has been in more exotic places. Where everything seems fake and where real things, where the word “love” sounds to many like something out-dated. A world where, we, those who believe in these things, are accused of being cheesy and naïve. In which we have to stand the incredulous looks of many who look at us as if we were aliens. As if we were telling them that we still believe in Santa Claus. “Poor idiot!” Well, you know what? You are free to believe and think whatever you please, but I do believe. I believe in giving yourself to others, in sacrificing yourself for the people you love and if, for whatever reason, they have one of those days where everything goes wrong and they just want to shoot themselves, I’ll do whatever it takes to make them smile. Because although I know that nobody is perfect, I’m not looking for perfect. I am looking for someone who, with all his imperfections, is perfect for me and accepts me for what I am, with all my defects. If you are a frivolous person, that is your business.

Sometimes you have to stand your ground and say “Look, no. I’m not interested. Thanks but no, thanks”. Because saying “no” is not bad. Only if, when saying “no” we are saying “yes” to ourselves. “Yes” to what I want. “Yes” to what expect from life and from others. Because I’m worth it. Because I deserve it. And even if I don’t deserve it, because that is what I want. Period. Because I have the right to want what I want and no one will convince me of the contrary, no matter how much they make fun of me or tell me that I’m too demanding. Because as Frankie from Dream for an Insomniac said “Unless it is mad, passionate, extraordinary love, it is a waste of time. Too many things are mediocre in life. Love shouldn’t be one of them”.

La buena educación/ Manners

En mi casa contar suelen
Que un humilde portero
Le hacía un día a mi abuelo
La siguiente reflexión

"Usted, Don Tanis, me saluda
Aunque sea una figura
Mostrando gran corrección

Mientras que el tonto del vecino
Que es hijo de un campesino
No muestra ni pizca de educación.

Por yo ser pobre portero
Como a un perro a mi me trata
Al creer por tener plata
Que es un conde o un barón.

De haber sido bien instruído
No sería tan mal nacido
Eso es culpa de sus padres.

Poca cuchara de plata
Diría más bien de hojalata
Gasta ese hombre, Señor Grandes."

A este noble pobre hombre
No le faltaba razón
Pues hay quién tiene dinero
Y muy poca educación.

Quien por tener llenos los bolsillos,
Lujosas ropas o grandes anillos
Se tiene por Carlos V
O el mismo Cid Campeador.

Más como dice una amiga:
Hay que ver qué cosas hace
Quien pasa de ser un don nadie
A ser persona notable,

Pues no hay acto más infame
Ni actitud más despreciable
Que tratar a un empleado
De forma tan deleznable.

Es ahí donde se nota
La calidad de la crianza
Si les dieron manga ancha
U oportuno bofetón

Que hay quién se cree mejor
Por tener amplia fortuna
Superando en su tontuna
Al más patético bufón.

Desconfiad por ello del hombre
Que hinca la rodilla ante el noble
Y, en cambio, humilla a su inferior,

Ya que la clase de un caballero
No se mide por su dinero
Sino por su buena educación.

Manners

In my house they usually tell
That one day a humble doorman
Shared with my grandfather
The following thought:

You, Don Tanis, greet me
Although you are a leading figure
Showing great courtesy,

Whereas the fool of the neighbour,
Who is the son of a peasant,
Does not show the slightest education.

For being a poor doorman
He treats me like a dog
Thinking that, because he has money,
He is a Count or a Baron.

If he had been well instructed
He would not be such a swine
That is his parents fault.

That man has no prince manners,
I would rather say
Those of a boor, Mr. Grandes”.

This poor man was absolutely right,
Since there are people who have money
And very little manners.

Who, for having their pockets full,
luxurious clothes and big jewels,
Think that they are Charles V
Or the Cid Campeador himself.

But as a friend of mine usually says:
What terrible things does a man
When, from being a nobody
He turns into a notable person.

For there is no act which is more infamous
Or a more despicable attitude
Than treating an employee
In such a vile way.

That is when you see
The quality of their breeding
Whether they were lenient with them
or gave them an opportune slap,

Because there are people who think
They are better than the rest
For having a great fortune,
Beating in their foolishness
The most pathetic of buffoons.

For this reason, mistrust the man
Who kneels before a noble
And humiliates his inferiors,

For the class of a gentleman
Is not measured by his money
But by his good education.
