Personalmente, no me supone ningún sacrificio
No te convence. Has crecido. Tus gustos han
cambiado. Tú has cambiado.
somos.
Wardrobe cleaning
Spring is here, or for those who are at the
Southern Cone like me, autumn. We are changing seasons and, like every year, my
mom is already chasing me around so that I clean my wardrobe. It’s time to make
the quarterly present to the nuns. And always the same dilemmas arise: what do
I keep and what do I give away.
Sometimes the decision is quite simple.
Personally, I don’t mind giving away that shirt which is too tight and that
shows the worst side of you, or those trousers which expose those extra kilos
you’ve gained over the past holidays which seem to have come to stay. There are
also those horrible trends to which you gave in for wanting to be trendy like
the belly top that, although now it’s called cropped top, is still not at all
flattering. Unless of course, you have the tummy of a Victoria’s Secret Angel.
For sure, it’s not my case. And what do you say about those low cut
bell-bottomed trousers? Those which revealed all your charms as soon as you
would bend a little in the same way that guys dragged around trousers which
were three sizes bigger than the usual and showed their boxers which,
generally, were also of a very questionable taste. The same thing happens with
those plastic ball necklaces or the fishing thread chokers that at a certain
age you cannot wear without looking like Alanis Morisette. Like my father says “Some
trends should be banned”. It was nice while it lasted (and aesthetically that
is very questionable) but those clothes need to go.
However, there are times when the decision is
somewhat more difficult. We all have one of those special T-shirt. When you
bought it you would wear it all the time. You loved it. You wore it to parties,
to go shopping or, simply, to go have a walk. And in case it wasn’t in your
closet when you were looking for it, you would take it off the line and wear it
nonetheless. Even if it was damp or wrinkled. But as time went by, and without
you even noticing it, you just don’t like the t-shirt as much as you used to.
You don’t feel like wearing it anymore and little by little it gets buried under
other t-shirts which are newer and which match more with your current style.
That doesn’t mean you are not fond of it. You have lived a lot of things
together. You share a lot of memories. But you know, much to your regret, that
it has already fulfilled its function and that it cannot be worn any longer.
Yes, from time to time you wear it to be at home, to remember the good old
times, but you don’t feel comfortable with it anymore. It doesn’t convince you
anymore. You have grown. Your taste has changed. You have changed.
Here is where the dilemma appears. You have two
options: to put it away in your closet in case one day you start liking it
again or to give it to someone else so they can enjoy it as much as you did at the
time. This might be painful, but as you grow up you learn what suits you best
and what flatters you most. Because, in the end, our wardrobe reflects our
character and this one changes and forges over time. For that reason, even if
it hurts, sometimes we have to relinquish from certain things. Unless you want
them to get torn apart and that they turn into rags in our kitchen.
